Controlling Systems Retrofit FAQs
Get to Know Your New HVAC System
A new HVAC system can operate a little differently from the equipment you were used to—and that doesn’t always mean something is wrong. From longer run times and different sounds to heat pump operation, thermostat controls, maintenance, and more, understanding what to expect can help you feel more confident with your new system.
We’ve answered some of the most common questions homeowners have after an HVAC retrofit to help you better understand your equipment, how it works, and how to care for it moving forward.
HOW YOUR SYSTEM WORKS
Why does my new system sound different or louder than my old one?
A new HVAC system can sound different even when the equipment itself has a quieter rating. In a retrofit, the new equipment still has to work with the home’s existing ductwork, registers and return-air system. Airflow requirements, blower operation, duct sizing and air velocity can all affect what you hear throughout the home.
Why does my new system seem to run longer than my old one?
Many newer systems are designed to maintain temperature instead of repeatedly turning fully on and off. Staged and modulating equipment may run for longer periods at lower output and lower airflow. Longer operation can therefore be normal and may provide steadier temperatures and quieter operation.
HEAT PUMPS & DUAL FUEL
Why is my furnace running when I have a heat pump?
A dual-fuel system uses both a heat pump and a gas furnace. The controls determine when the furnace should take over based on how the system was designed and configured for the home.
When does my heat pump switch to my furnace?
There is not one universal outdoor temperature for every home. The changeover depends on the equipment, the home’s heating load, the thermostat setting and the system design. Your system is configured based on the application rather than a single rule for every house.
What is the difference between the balance point and the economic point?
The balance point relates to when the heat pump’s available heating capacity can no longer keep up with the home’s heating load. That load also depends on the indoor temperature being maintained, so the balance point is not simply one fixed outdoor temperature. The economic point is different: it considers operating cost, including heat-pump performance and local electricity and gas costs. A heat pump can still be energy-efficient while the gas furnace may become less expensive to operate.
Does changing my thermostat setting affect when the furnace may come on?
Yes. Asking the home to maintain a higher indoor temperature increases the heating load. At the same outdoor temperature, a system maintaining 75°F has a different load than one maintaining 68°F. That can affect when supplemental or furnace heat is needed.
MINI-SPLITS / DUCTLESS
Why is my mini-split still running after the room reaches the temperature I set?
The indoor unit may continue operating after the room reaches setpoint as part of normal system operation. Seeing or hearing the indoor unit continue to run does not necessarily mean it is continuing to heat or cool at full output.
Can I paint my Mitsubishi indoor unit?
Controlling Systems does not recommend painting Mitsubishi indoor equipment and will not paint the indoor unit. Alterations can affect the equipment and applicable warranty coverage. If you are considering changing the appearance of the unit, contact Controlling Systems first so we can explain what can and cannot be modified.
Can I build a cabinet or decorative cover around my mini-split?
We do not recommend covering or enclosing an indoor mini-split. The unit requires proper airflow to operate correctly. Cabinetry, curtains, furniture or decorative covers can restrict airflow, affect performance and potentially damage the equipment.
YOUR EQUIPMENT & YOUR HOME
Why is my outdoor heat pump mounted on a stand?
Heat pumps operate outdoors during winter and need appropriate clearance from expected snow accumulation. The stand helps keep the outdoor unit above the snow line and maintains the clearance needed for winter operation.
Can I paint the line-set cover on the outside of my house?
Yes, line-set cover (often called line-hide) is paintable. Controlling Systems does not provide the paint. If appearance or color matching is important, discuss it with us before the retrofit. Painting the underside after installation can be very difficult
Can I put a fence, screen or landscaping around my outdoor unit?
Possibly, but the equipment must maintain the manufacturer’s required clearances and airflow. Before installing fencing, screening, landscaping or another enclosure around the outdoor equipment, contact Controlling Systems.
FILTERS, MAINTENANCE & WARRANTY
What filter does my new system use?
Your filter size and type should be recorded with your system information. Replacement filters can also be ordered through the Controlling Systems online shop and shipped to your home.
Why does a brand-new system need maintenance?
Regular maintenance is required to properly care for the equipment and maintain warranty requirements. It also gives the system an opportunity to be inspected, cleaned and checked for proper operation after it has been working in the home.
Is maintenance required for my warranty?
Yes. Manufacturer warranty requirements include maintenance, and the Controlling Systems labor warranty backed by JB Warranty also requires maintenance. Keep records of completed maintenance so there is documentation that the system has been properly maintained.
What is the Controlling Systems membership?
The membership is designed to make ongoing system maintenance easier to keep up with. Membership information should be presented alongside the maintenance requirements so homeowners understand their options for keeping required service on schedule.
THERMOSTATS & CONTROLS
How do I connect or use my new thermostat or equipment app?
App setup depends on the equipment installed in your home. Controlling Systems can provide the appropriate setup resource for your system, including Mitsubishi Comfort App and Ruud mobile resources. If you have trouble connecting or operating the controls, contact Controlling Systems for help.
